The punishment for assault in India varies depending on the severity and circumstances. Simple assault can attract imprisonment up to 3 months or fine or both. Assault with intent to outrage modesty carries imprisonment up to 5 years with fine. Assault with intent to dishonor a person carries imprisonment up to 2 years or fine or both. Culpable homicide not amounting to murder occurs when death is caused without premeditation, in sudden provocation, or exceeding the right of private defense. Murder generally carries life imprisonment or death penalty, while culpable homicide not amounting to murder typically carries imprisonment up to 10 years with fine.
